Cryptozoology
is the study of animals that are rumored to exist. Such creatures are called "cryptids." Some, like the gorilla, giant squid and okapi, are no longer hearsay and legend but real creatures recognized by science. Others, like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster, continue to tempt the hopeful and the adventurous with the possibility of their existence.
Loch Ness Monster
The Loch Ness Monster is a mythical creature said to live in Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. There have been thousands of reported sightings of the folklore monster, affectionately known as Nessie.
Chupacabra
The chupacabra or chupacabras, known as the "goat-sucker," is a legendary creature in the folklore of parts of the Americas, with its first purported sightings reported in Puerto Rico. The name comes from the animal's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, including goats. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. It is purportedly a heavy creature, the size of a small bear, with a row of spines reaching from the neck to the base of the tail.
The Mongolian Deathworm
According to legend, the dreaded Mongolian Death Worm — which local people call olgoi-khorkhoi or loosely translated, "large intestine worm" — has lived up to its name. It can kill in several fearsome ways, including spitting a stream of corrosive venom that is lethal to anything it hits, and if that doesn't do the trick it is said to be able to electrocute its victims from a distance. Rarely seen and never photographed, it was mentioned in a 1926 book by paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews, who didn't believe in the animal's existence but noted that stories of it circulated in Mongolia.
“Sightings of Bigfoot date back a thousand years. Natives of North America’s Pacific north-west long ago gave it a name: Sasquatch. Two-and-a-half meters tall and weighing over three hundred and fifty kilos, it’s been described as a massive primate. Unlike a gorilla, this animal walks on two legs.”
Wendigo
The Wendigo comes from Algonquian Native American folklore and is the result of some severe hunger pains. As the tale goes, he was once a lost hunter. During a brutally cold winter, his intense hunger drove him to cannibalism. After feasting on human flesh, he became a crazed monster, roaming the forest in search of more people to eat.
Those who live in a warm climate can breathe easy; the Wendigo is a cold-weather creature, having been spotted in Canada as well as colder northern states like Minnesota. As the bitter frost is no longer a problem for him like it was when he was a mere hunter, he is immune to even the harshest conditions.
